What is UIF?
The Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) provides short-term financial relief to workers who lose their income due to unemployment, illness, maternity, or adoption. Both employees and employers contribute 1% of the employee's monthly salary to the fund.
Who can claim?
You can claim UIF if you:
- Were dismissed, retrenched, or your employer became insolvent
- Are unable to work due to illness for more than 14 days
- Are on maternity leave
- Were contributing to UIF for at least 13 weeks in the previous 4 years
Domestic workers, part-time workers, and learnership employees are all eligible β provided UIF was deducted from their wages.
Documents you need
Before visiting a Labour Centre or using uFiling, gather:
- South African ID (green barcoded ID or smart card ID)
- UI-19 form β completed by your previous employer showing your employment history and reason for leaving
- Last 6 payslips or a letter of service confirming your salary
- Banking details β a stamped bank statement or a bank letter not older than 3 months
- Proof of registration β if you are registered on uFiling
If you were retrenched, you also need a retrenchment letter from your employer.
How to claim online via uFiling
- Go to uFiling.labour.gov.za
- Register if you haven't already (you'll need your ID number and the email address your employer used to register you)
- Click Benefits β Apply for Benefits
- Select the benefit type (Unemployment, Illness, Maternity, etc.)
- Complete the application form β employment history will auto-populate if your employer registered you correctly
- Upload your supporting documents
- Submit and note your application reference number
Processing takes 6 to 8 weeks in normal circumstances. You will receive an SMS when your claim is approved.
How to claim in person
If you cannot access uFiling or have problems with your online claim:
- Visit your nearest Department of Employment and Labour office
- Arrive early β queues can be very long, especially on Mondays
- Take original documents AND certified copies of everything
- Ask for a UI-2.1 form (application for unemployment benefits) if not already registered
The clerk will capture your application on the system and give you a reference number.
Why claims get delayed or rejected
- Employer did not register you with UIF β your employer must fix this first
- Incorrect banking details β even one wrong digit causes a failed payment
- Missing UI-19 form β follow up with your previous employer immediately
- Gaps in contribution record β if you were paid cash with no UIF deduction, those periods won't count
Checking your claim status
On uFiling: log in β Benefits β View Benefits History. You can see whether your claim is pending, approved, or rejected, and the reason for any rejection.
How long do payments last?
UIF pays out 1 day for every 4 days worked, up to a maximum of 365 days over 4 years. The daily benefit amount is a percentage of your daily wage, on a sliding scale β lower earners receive a higher percentage.
GovAssist SA guides you through the entire UIF process with a document checklist, application status tracker, and step-by-step prompts β so you never miss a required document or deadline.
